1931 Chevrolet Independence 5 Window Coupe – Rumble Seat

This 1931 5 Window Coupe was previously owned in Wisconsin where it was part of a well maintained collection of older Chevys. The car was an older restoration and is a very nice example. It’s a great driver and we have put about 10 miles on it. Please be sure to watch our detailed youtube video from the most in depth analysis of this car. The previous owner took specail care to drain fuel and to properly store the car when sitting. He was an avid collector so that car is surprisingly well sorted mechanically.

Body:

This is a nice solid example and it appears to be all original metals and panels. The body is well intact and would appear to have been restored sometime in the 70’s (this is a guess, of course). Doors line up nicely and it appears to have all the trim and hardware in tact. Normal dents and dings as you can see throughout and the paint is tired in certain arrears. We gave it a light polishing and this is how it turned out. A day with a buffer might warrant a better finish but we were happy with how it shows. The vinyl roof is tires and dried. The glass is nice and as clean and clear as you would expect. Chrome work is nice and the wheels, while painted, are nice and straight.

Interior:

The interior was obviously redone but it looks good and consistent with the rest of the car. The materials are still in good shape and the rubber may on the floor is still nice and pliable. The manual windshield and rear window levers are inop, althouht the front knob moves the windshield up slightly. All dash gauges appear to be in working order although we cannot guarantee anything. Pedals and shifter move nicely and add to the driving experience.

Motor:

The 194 I6 “Stovebolt” is in good running order. The adjustable Idle and Choke levers help get it up to temperature and once warm it holds a nice low idle. It appears to have good compression and we dont notice much in the way of exhaust smoke. It is still on a 6volt system however it is a negative ground which is much safer. The 3 speed manual transmission shifts nicely and the clutch feel is great. It accelerates nice and smooth and makes its way through the gears nicely. Stopping is straigth and even and the pedal has a confidence inspirign feel to it.
